Project Status

So what's everybody doing? Does anybody have current boat projects. Or other projects?

I am currently building an entertainment center out of pine for the family room. Its 6' high and 10' wide. I'm using a dark gell stain followed by a gell wipe on poly that I'm not very fond of mostly because it's not very productive. The end result is professional looking, however. Nothing fancy to the design, it's actually very simple in construction. Kind of a shaker style.

We have 25 members I know all of you have projects you are either working on or procrastinating or a next project your thinking about starting.

Lets get a "sound-off" from everyone on project status...

  1. Well if it's ok to mention, I just finished up a new Trapper canoe design:

  2. I just came in from installing my new bronze portholes. It's kind of scary cutting holes in the side of the cabin, but they came out pretty nice. The ports are installed temporarily. I'll pull them off tonight and seal the raw wood with epoxy. I hope to be able to paint the cabin soon - then I will be able to install them permanently. I'll post some pictures one of these days.

The pilothouse windows are ordered. They should be here in a month or so. Still hoping to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July from the middle of Lake Union. We'll see - there's a lot of work to be done before then.

  3. Hi fellow members,

I am at present doing a restoration project on a 70 year old English East Coast Sailing Yacht called Gadfly II which I brought through Ebay for a £100.00 . The boat had been stripped out by the last owner who was going to do what I am doing now. But, he lost the will to finish it off. The hull is in good condition apart from a couple of planks and ribs and floors and a new set of keel bolts, which looking at are the original ones. Once the ribs and floors and keel bolts are refitted then I will get her afloat. You can view my progress on my website .www.jstartuition-boatservices.co.uk or my multiply page

  4. Matt: It's always been ok. That's a good looking boat. Do you have somebody in line to build it? I was also wondering if you build and stock any for sale. Just curious really. You can reply here or start a new blog. It's all good. Did RJ ever communicate with you?

Tom: I'll bet it is scary. Measure twice, draw the lines, check to see if it looks right. Measure two more times. Cut once. Can't wait to see the updated photos.

Simon: I was wondering about your new website. I noticed the old one is not live anymore. Your Gadfly looks like a fun project. She has some old world character and nice lines. Keep notes on your process so we can get another article in.

Thanks guys for the updates. We should have a few more coming in.

  5. Hi everyone, waiting for the cold to go away so I can open the garage and get back to work. Winter seems to have hung on longer than usual... Then it will be back to the Curlew so I can finish her off...

  6. Thanks. I have one builder who plans on starting soon as he gets the plans in the mail.

I've thought about trying to build for retail sales but never really investigated the market potential. I suppose if someone wanted me to build, I would. But for that to happen, I really need to get a sample of what's available out there.

I do want to build something and try to get to a couple boat shows to market my boat plans more.

Didn't hear from RJ but he may have gotten all the info he needed from you.
