Warmer Temps - Yeah!!

Don't know about the rest of you but I am so psyched for next week.  We have temps predicted in the 50's.  It has been far too long trying to work in an overcrowded garage.  With all of the snow and cold right now I can't move stuff out of there and into my basement - next week I can so I can breathe...

  1. OK, now we are cookin'.  We have been running temps in  the 60's and 70's and does it feel good outside.  I have dry-fitted all of the bench supports into the hull and am now ready to prime them and reinstall with epoxy and screws.  The mast partner is fitted and ready to install.   After this it is on to actually painting the interior and then putting in the deck framing ( and accompanying support blocking for cleats, deck blocks, etc.)  around the sides and stern.  The decking, benches, and mast are all going to be clear coated...      Looks like hell don't it... I'll post more pics of progress as I get them.   Andy

  2. Ok, I am priming and painting the inside of the hull now (pictures to follow today or tomorrow).  The bench seats will be installed after this is completed.  I plan to stain and varnish the seating, gun'ls, tiller and mast, the grates, and possibly the foredeck.   Here is my question, can I add a grit or traction material to spar varnish?.  My plan is to varnish the gratings and foredeck with a couple of coats of varnish, then add traction material, then a few more coats of varnish.  Does this sound plausible and doable.  I like the looks of "woodwork".  The hull is going to be either dark green/white, or dark blue/white and hardware is hopefully all going to be bronze.   Andy

  3. Hi Andy I took some sand into my shed laid it flat on a tray till it was dry then riddled out the stones and large particles test mixed some sand with black paint and painted some scarp marine ply, its worked a treat! then mixed more and painted the floor of a cabin cruiser.
It worked better than my previous idea of throwing dried sand onto wet paint very uneven bad bad idea!.
new job means not on pc as much or finishing my canoe seat.

  4. Hey Bogs, glad to hear from you - thanks for the advice, I sort of thought it would work with sand but it is good to hear of someone who really has tried it.  I don't need to make a large batch, just enough for the bow deck where I will have to work with the jib.  I plan on having bright finished grating and I think I will mix up a small batch of varnish with sand and see how it wears.  Spar varnishes are a "soft" finish but maybe if I do enough coats it will show good wear...   Speaking of varnish, I need to get my stripper down out of the garage rafters and get it re-varnished so I can actually enjoy it this summer before the snow flies... My wife and I are talking about a day trip down the Namekogan River here in NW Wisc., It is about an hour away and has great trout fishing!!!
