Finished my first boat.

Not sure if anyone still come out here, been very quiet lately.  I check the board daily, and haven't seen a new post in awhile.  Must be everyone is working on their boats.

Well here is one I just finished building, still have a little sanding and touch up work, before painting.  It's a Merrymeeting Sculling boat, used to hunt ducks, by slowing sneeking up on them.

  1. Cool Boat Wildie,   Looks like a fun boat, congrats for finishing her up. You going to paint her camo colors for duck hunting? I assume you are a duck hunter.   It has been pretty quiet. Not sure why.  I too check the board almost every day. Guess we should just strike up a conversation.   Bill

  2. Nice job!!!  Since our move I have a garage stuffed with, well, STUFF, and haven't been able to move in the sailboat - she's still under a tarp with I am sure, water "rotting" in the bilges   I had to work most of today and with this heat up here in nw wi (we're at 102) I'm not sure I have the energy to tackle the garage aka the "boat shed" -- maybe this evening.   Andy

  3. Oh come on it wasn't that bad.  I sent the weekend out in the boat shed building.  Granted, I had two whole house fans shoved in the windows, blowing so hard, people were making Oz jokes.  Then my little guy comes out, I am sitting on a chair taking a break.  He climbs up sits on my lap for about 30 second, climbs down and say "Dad you smell bad, go take a shower", he five.

  4. Hi, I have been happy (until now) to just read other peoples' postings but you made me feel guilty. It is indeed a fine looking craft and I am deeply envious. I'm still working up the courage to tackle a project. Cheers

  5. Mick:  do like the rest of us and take the plunge, start with something simple and inexpensive and see how it goes.  The over used, much changed addage still applies:   A bad day boatbuilding is still better than a good day at work...   Andy

  6. Mick, what kind of boat are you thinking about building?  Sailboat, motorboat or speciality boat?  Decided on that and then start looking at plans, places like Wooden Boat, Glen L to name a few.  Personally, I started buying WoodBoat several years ago and have never missed an issue.  Alot of the boats I would never want, but the construction note are still very helpful.   If you have some woodworking skills and a few tools, it's really more patiences than skills.   So buy some plans and get started.  When you have questions, post them up.  While there isn't alot of post here, people still read them and will throw out some help when needed.   Good luck.

  7. Yes, I bet you have fun... I always does.. It something to have a pride in and to proud about, is seeing a finish boat sitting in the water... I get alot of good feeling after the first dunk testing for leaks.. Because, I have worries about a small leak that can't be stopped, knocking on the wood, I haven't found any leaks in all my boats yet... I must be doing something right...
