My half-finished Curlew and I are moving to a new home... along with the wife and kids, pets, etc.
After living for the past 10 years on a shallow, weedy (but great fishing) lake here in NW Wisconsin, we sold our land and home and have now rented a house near here on another lake which is about 6 times larger with depths up to 120'. This is a great sailing lake with good steady winds. I hope the finished Curlew will do justice to this great lake!
With all of the upheaval and drama going on in our lives for the past couple of years, the boat has been put on the back burner. This move has strengthened my determination to complete the job so I can get her on the water...
Andy
Good luck with the move and finishing the boat. Where do you hale from? I am over in Green Bay. Hope the drama is over, exictment is over rated.
ReplyDeleteWe are in Rice Lake, an hour north of Eau Claire and an hour south of Superior. I have a sister who lives in New Holstein which is sort of in your neck of the woods... Glad to know their are Wisconsinites hanging out here - what are you up to in the boat building world? Andy
ReplyDeleteAndy, So, Rice Lake is the location of the new home? If so, what was the old lake. I knew sombody from rice lake, If i can only remember who that was. I used to call Milwaukee home, now it's "back home" we are still in Central Indiana. I would move back up that way in a heart beat. Confused as to your new location vs. old. -Kruez- Go Packers
ReplyDeleteAnother Wisconsinite hanging here. I'm in Port Washington which is about
ReplyDeletethirty miles north of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan.

Hey Kruez: Rice Lake is the city we live in and the current lake we live on - If you get my drift. We will still have a RL address when we move just north of here to the new lake which is called Bear Lake. There is a little town actually between our new house (and lake) and the city of RL called Haugen, WI but because we are considered a rural address our mail comes out of RL as Haugen only has PO Boxes. Ironically, our new landlord says that there is currently a bear that uses the yard at the new place as a thoroughfare so Bear Lake seems kindof appropriate. Kruez, you may be "temporarily" in Indiana but you'll always be a Wisconsinite to me... and a brother of the PACK!!!!!!!!!!! Russ: I actually finished my last two years of high school (1978) in Port Washington and my folks have lived in Saukville for the past 4 years. I have quite a few family members and relatives in the Milwaukee to Green Bay area. as a kid I spent many summers fishing and sailing at my grandparents "cottage" on Big Cedar Lake outside of West Bend and of course on the breakwater at Port. Thanks for saying hi... Andy
ReplyDeleteWow, I had not idea there were that many people from WI on this board. Andy had a great idea, in asking what I was up to. So what is everyone building? Currently I am working on three boats, well sort of. In my garage right now, I have a 16' sculling boat for duck hunting, completely glassed, putting the knees in and decking this week. In the basement I have the plywood to in a Devlin Scaup, another duck hunting boat. And lastly I have in a storage unit the start of a Haven 12 1/2, that I am slowly building, as my son (wife) says, it's a race to see if I finish the boat or he graduates from high school first, he will be starting 1st grade in the fall. I am thinking of putting the Haven on premenant hold or selling whats done of it and building a weekend or vacationier. I would really like to see/touch one before I start building one. Would like something that I can put on Lake Michagan, sail the coast down to Milwaukee and sleep on the boat, yet trailerable so I can haul it to Winnabago and day sail there. Anyone have one?
ReplyDeleteHi, we are back on line, the move is almost completed with just house cleaning at the old place and organizing the new... Andy
ReplyDeleteI have a weekender. It's a great boat, but I would recommend it for sheltered water only. The big lake might be a bit much for it. It has a flat bottom, which means she pounds in chop. It's a solid little boat, fun to sail, but anyone who uses it for more then a daysailer is a little extreeme in my opinion. That being said, there are many people who sail the weekender in the ocean, along the coast. A friend took a two week trip in his. I decided early on that I wanted to get mine done and not screw around. I completed mine in 3.5 mos of nights and weekends. It's not the fanciest boat, but it has clean lines and quality construction. The weekender goes together very quick, there is a huge support group for the boat, and all the materials can be purchsesd from local stores. The boat sails well, but not extreemly quick. It's a safe family boat if that puts an image in your head. The Vacationer is a much larger boat, much more time and materials. It's a 22 or 24 ft weekender basically. It can be trailered easily. Oh the weekender comes with awsome plans (Step by step book) and a video. If there is anything else you want to know just ask. john_c_abbett@bausch.com
