Paint scratches

Can anyone tell me how to keep the bottom side of my boat from getting all scratched up from rocks.  Seem's like I am always touching up the sides and bottom of the boat. Is this just the nature of wooden boats?  I am very new at boat building and could use some help in this area.  Is there some kind of hardener that could be applied over the paint?  I have tried Oil base and Latex paints and still seems like the paint doesnt adhere to the fiberglass resin verey well.

    I have a 38 foot cape island style , when I purchased it 3 years ago I
removed all of the paint on the exterior, hull included. Then I painted it
(above the water line ) withe Zinseers , Bulls Eye Primer (2 coats) then
with Benjamin Moore latex semi-gloss .This held up well , the only thing is
it is harder to clean than oil. Latex takes about a week to fully cure . Up
to that time it scraches fairly easy but after cure it is hard to scratch. I
also did a 27 foot Trojan (wood) this way and that was four years ago and
the paint is still in good shape

It should be noted that you cannot put oil over latex without priming first
, the Bulls Eye makes a good binder.

Last year I experimented with a 2 part Polyurathane on the hull , it gave me
a very hard surface, scratch resistant and easy to clean . This is a very
expensive option but so far it looks like the way to go. I had a little
docking accident in the fall and the paint was easily sanded out and toughed
up without showing the work. I used bullseye uder the polyurtahe on one side
and 2 part epoxy primer on the other. There is no difference on the paint
    adhesion.

Below the waterline I am still using bottom paint. As I don't know what type
of boat you have or whether you keep it in the water or hauling it out after
    use , I can't recomend anything.

By the way , rocks will take off the paint no matter what you use.

    Good Luck

    Gary

PS I have a picture of my old boat on this site.....38 foot atkinson
