I just received the plans for a Vacationer 21' sailboat. Do any of you have experience with these boats?

ReplyDeleteVacationer is big brother to a real cutie called the Weekender. You'll find lots of neat info and photos at;

It's a very active and user friendly society of builders, sailors and wags - with lots of pictures, build instructions, additions, subtractions, advice and group consciousness.
Never sailed a Vacationer or Weekender. Have a Weekender set of plans et al in my library with firm plans to build one when the $'s come rolling in and I get 'roundtoit'.
Cheers and good luck, PrairieSchooner
Howdy, I have the plans and the video for the Weekender but I haven't built one yet. It would be my first boat, period and I'm torn between building this one for about $5000 CDN or purchasing some used tupperware tub for the same amount. One way, I get to build my own boat and maybe lose another year of sailing, the other way I get out sailing now and can start building the other in the winter. I do know the resale on these boats is low (not much real cabin room) compared to some of the old 'fantasic plasic' around. A guy selling one here in Ontario started at $9000 CDN and eventually (after a year) sold it for 5500. True be told, I'm thinking of building a 7-8' wineglass hulled dingy to use as a tender for a larger fibreglass boat. That will give me some boat building experience and give me a better idea of whether I want to build a bigger boat or not. Frank
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to be able to build the boat until the fall so it will be a year or two before we get in the water.

FatherJim, There is a large MSN group dedicated to: builders and others interested in the Pocket Yachts (Weekender, Vacationer and Pocket Cruiser) from Stevenson Projects Check them out, but come back and see us... Here is the link: http://groups.msn.com/WeekenderBoatbuilding
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, I signed up but I am interested in more wooden boats than those. I especially like the great yachts from the 20's and 30's but wooden boats from anywhere and anytime are interesting to me. That's why I joined this group!

Cool Beans, We are happy to have you here Father Jim. I too like anything made of wood. I especially enjoy looking at Gar Wood runabouts and anything from Faye & Bowen. Makes my eyes happy if you know what I mean... -Kruez-
