How's Everyone Doing...

Kind of quiet around here right now...   Summer time, family functions, FISHING, house projects, FISHING, lawn mowing, baseball games, work of course, MORE FISHING...
I am very guilty of going fishing instead of working on the boat.  It is very tough living on a lake because the sirens call is pulling me out there instead of to the garage where I have a half-finished boat lol!!!
Anyway, is anyone actually working on their boats right now?

  1. I've been trying to sail as much as possible. I have all the wood and have also already cut out the molds for Tom Hills Charlotte - I'll probably start this soon. I'll have to do some more maintenance this winter on the Cerlew.

A group of 10 boats sailing out of Ocean Gate NJ, I took some video and posted it on Yahoo. The last segment is flying home in the Cerlew - hint, hint - c'mon Andy get-er-done.

10 boats set out from Ocean Gate, NJ. Kevin Brennen launched his brand new Navigator - it's first sail. We went across to Island Beach State Park and had lunch. I had not brought my GPS as the forecast was for light wind, but the wind and waves picked up just as we we started beating to Tyson Shoal, 3 of us pressed on and made it. At Tyson Shoal a few of us walked across the island for a quick dip in the ocean - the water was quite cold. We already had or put in 1 or 2 reefs and then had a sleigh ride back. I stopped filming when the swells picked up a little more and we were going even faster. A great day was had by all with dinner afterwards.

This may not be practical but I chopped up the 24 min video into 5 sections to upload to yahoo, (also the original DVD is about 3x crisper than the yahoo video).

  2. Thanks Phil!   Great video clips! I watched them all.  You have certainly stimulated me to continue on my boat.  I have been so busy with work and family that the boat has taken back- seat...  I really haven't gone fishing THAT much  lol...   Andy

  3. Andy,
I'm as guilty as any of the rest of us about not building on a boat (finished my last one two years ago) . The most terrible thing is I haven't even had time to go fishing this year. I am working on designs to improve the characteristics of my last boat. (i.e. a rudder and a forward rowing rig).

  4. At least you are thinking about it!!!  lol   Received my brass woodscrews today for the benches.  Hoping to start interior painting this weekend.  I was going to spray apply it but because so little is actually seen I am going to just brush and roll the interior.   As stated in my other post - a friend has given me an old "snipe" boat...  Hoping to run over and pick it up this weekend.   Andy

  5. Andy Your right, a bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work. The weather on the Great Lakes this summer has been sooo bad, with thunder storms just about everyday and high winds and hail, working on my 1939 Snipe just isn't fun. The bass are biting like crazy, so fishing it is. Al Duquette Mast Confusion N30

  6. Al, are you sailing your Snipe on the "big waters?"  What is the length of her mast and boom?  I have looked at the official rules of the Snipe class and no where does it list a min/max height for the mast, just min. dimensions for width at various points on the mast along with taper requirements and wght.  I still haven't seen this wooded Snipe I am being given so don't know if her hull is salvagable...   We are having rain here in northwest WI which is "forcing" me to work on the boat out in the garage.  I finally feel like I am getting into the swing of things and can make some considerable progress on completing her...   Regards,   Andy
