Informal Survey...

The other night as I was working on the hull of my 16' daysailer I started wondering if everyone has one job or task that they dread the most/like the least, in the construction process.  Personally, I am finding that doing all of the filleting of the ribs, chines, corners, cracks, nooks, and crannies with wood flour epoxy filler is about the most god awful job there is.  I swear I've been at this part of the project FOREVER.  Granted, I only get an hour or two here and there, but still...

So, whats your (collective) personal nemisis's?

  1. I can see the filleting being a drag. It is such a slow tedious job to do clean work. For me it's basically the same thing only after the primer and  needing to applying bondo to all those bad fillets, a poor sanding and shaping job, pinholes, etc. I guess it is the same dynamic: Make everything nice and smoothe, don't leave any ridges that need to be sanded later, get all the extra goo cleaned up, and my favorite, pull that damn piece of sawdust off the edge of the applicator so you can re-do the fillet or fill you just carved a line in. And I guess that is not all that bad, but you have several minutes to work and it's into the acetone bucket with the applicators.     But like my mom used to tell me when I was a kid: "Count yourself lucky. there are starving people in Africa that don't even have a boat to build". 2. Without a doubt the scraping and sanding of the glue from inside the hull of my cedar strip cosine wherry was the pits. I'll definitely wipe the inside drips away while they are still wet next time! Will

  4. Mine is simply procrastination. Not working on my boat projects when I know I should or could. Working on them makes me happy. Have to agree with Bogs. It has to be pretty clear in my head before I cut and shape. I mow it over in the brain for sometimes too long...   -Kruez-

  5. Will, I'm with you on the "scraping sucks" part, but don't wipe the glue off or you will "size" the wood and see all the white marks after you glass, unless you are gonna paint inside then ignore me. Kent   PS can't imagine anyone painting the inside of a stipper.

  6. Mewolf1: Gotta agree with you on sanding stripped boats.  My 16 foot stripper was a pleasure to build.  I didn't personally find the sanding that bad dispite the drips.  I have an orbital palm sander from Makita that made this part of the job pretty easy...   p.s.  Nice turkey!

  8. when you wipe off the glue it impregnates it into the wood , you can't see it but when you glass it up it will turn white and so will you, much to your horror! The term sizing comes from the wallpapering world(at least thats where I got it from). It is to prep the wall so that all the wallpaper glue doesn't go into the drywall.Kinda like a primer. Scraping the glue off sucks but it is beeter than all the glue spots that you WILL create by wiping. Kent
