Crystal River Boat Builders

Built on the shore of the Crystal River.

At the Crystal River Preserve State Park in Citrus County, FL a group is building a 14ft Chesapeake Sharpie. We built the canvas roofed shed and the lofting "floor". We are only using hand tools. We expect to launch sometime early spring 2010.

  3. I'll start dating the photos as I put them up. Last Saturday half of our boatbuilders went AWOL to Cortez FL for a messabout with the group down there. (http://www.tsca.net/FGCTSCA/Home.html) Work went on though, we relieved the edges on the keelson and fastened it to the stem.

  4. Did I miss it somewhere? What lumber are you using for the re-cosntruct? Is it locally grown? I am excited to see how the rebuild goes...

Thank God for our educational system in this country - So many Americans do not realize just how good our Ed system is - Yes there are gaps and holes, but look at the size of the population.

Thank you USF for helping these folks out :)

  5. Our research showed that down here (Gulf Coast of FL) the planking would have been cyprus or white cedar. We had enough white cedar donated for the side planking and the bottom. The keelson, sheer batten and chine log would have been best made with heart pine -- which is VERY hard to find now. So we are using the closest approximation available, which is known down here as Cortez teak (pressure treated pine). Everything else will be white pine or fir. For the decking, we've been given many, many boards from an old red cedar fence -- we'll try to use the good ones... The mast is a nice straight pine tree -- it's presently soaking in the briny tidewater next to the boatshed. We'll attack that with drawknives and planes.

  6. Wednesday, December 2nd, is Media Day at CRBB. We've cleaned up the shop! Members are bringing their boats down. We've invited the local newspapers and TV stations to come see us. This is our first exposure to the public -- we're hoping for good results!

  10. I'm sorry that I haven't been able to keep this commentary and pictures up. The FULL story is on our website www.tsca.net/CRBB.

Wooden Boat Builder gave us some great exposure up until I got the website up...

Everybody here is invited to our BASH on the last weekend on April (after Cortez, before Cedar Keys..) for a celebration of the sharpie!
